Flatout: Ultimate Carnage

At a glance, Flatout UC seems to be a chaotic brawl of a racing game, and this is true but there are other things that make this game a special one as well.

When I bought this game and played it for the first time I was disappointed, I was a veteran of Flatout 2, the previous in the series on Xbox Original, and it seemed that nothing much had changed from that to this version. Even though this may be true this doesn’t mean that the whole game is just lifted from the Xbox Original. The career mode is still too short even though it may take inexperienced players much longer at higher levels yet the cars have been greatly improved. Each panel of your car is made to the finest detail and this is truly shown when you shred it up against a rival and see how the deformations occur.

The tracks have not been redesigned but they have been updated into High Definition and have had items added to them meaning that there are 5000 different things on the track that are movable and most can be deformed or destroyed. There are so many though in some areas though that the track becomes too crowded and your car is slowed down by the amount of things bumping against your car, this does not however mean that there is lag in the races, I have not experienced a race where there has been lag in it. One place where a track has been deleted is the test track which was extremely fun on the previous game where there were jumps and two mini handling tracks available to test the cars and to see if they were any good, it was a useful tool for measuring the pace of cars but it was apparently not necessary. The graphics in this game are absolutely amazing, I have played hours of Gears of War and Mass Effect and I’m still impressed by them. To really see them at there best you can pause the race at any point and use the right analogue stick to move the camera around your car, good for seeing how far enemies are behind you, better to see the sparks created by the rubbing of cars together.

The new game mode ‘Arcade’ is a new addition to the Flatout series and uses types from previous games and ones made for this game. You complete this mode by dong these events which range from; ‘Carnage Race’ (where you gain points depending on what position you are in and how heavily you deal a hit to the other player), ‘Beat the Bomb’ where you have to pass checkpoints to gain time before the bomb goes off, you gain points for the amount of distance travelled and ‘Deathmatch Derby’ which is a regular derby except there are powerups involved and points are gained for getting kills. Also stunt modes are in Arcade as well but these are explained later. My impression of Arcade mode is that it is a waste of time and effort though and although I enjoy the stunts and the Carnage Races, I feel that the time spent making it could have been put to better use somewhere else.

From the last game, the amount of AI drivers who race upon the same track as you has increased from 7 to 11 and with 12 racers on the track at the same time, carnage is usually fast paced and scarily common. Also to make the human driver more scared is the fact that the AI have also been changed and made more devious in some cases and more aggressive in others. Each of the AI drivers also have their own personal style unique to them which was implemented in the previous game but these traits are more distinctive in this one, sometimes this means that you know exactly what to expect from them though giving you time to prepare for defence. If you are to repel their attempts at you destruction repeatedly though, the AI will get wise and change its tactics.

Races and Derby’s are also harder than what they were previously like with one mistake sometimes costing you the entire race which means that occasionally you have to make frequent trips across the room to retrieve your controller or to find something soft to attack. This doesn’t make the game too frustrating though, it makes it more challenging and you are compelled to complete it, also there is an achievement for restarting an event a certain amount of times, making you happy that you have failed so many times. The races are fast paced, adrenaline filled and insane, meaning that unless you have the biggest car in the world you will often find your car hurtling into a wall because someone shunted you.

Stunt mode consists of 12 stunts where you ‘Ragdoll’ (launch out of the windscreen and then control using the left thumbstick) your driver and complete various sports (Bowling, Soccer, Ski Jump) or random games (Stone Skipping, Ring of Fire, High Jump) to get the highest score possible, this is incredibly fun and the game modes mean that a multiplayer ‘Hotseat’ (pass the controller around) match is possible for fun at a party.

To conclude, with the exclusion of Arcade mode this game is an incredible feat and for all race fans and the people that like the Burnout series should definitely look to be buying this game, the graphics and impressive realism make this game a white knuckle thrill ride of a game and should be attempted by anyone that likes to have a laugh and a challenge while playing a game. It is also a game that you can really easily pick up and play, the modes are not too hard to master and it is addictive to play so it easy to get good at it , I would give it a 9/10, if only this game was more widely advertised the developers would have more money to spend on it, I didn’t even know that it had been released until 2 weeks after launch :S.

9/10
