Sony Walkman NWZ-S639 Vs iPod Nano The iPod has dominated the mp3 player market for some time now and they are good devices however I feel it has gotten to a point where apple have pretty much monopolised the market without moving ahead of the competition. I've looked at a very good competitor to the iPod Nano which is the Sony walkman NWZ-S639. I think that for anything less than 16 GB that's just going to be used for music and videos, the Sony walkman is far superior to the iPod Nano. I think that it is better as it produces much better quality music thanks to the various sound enhancing technologies. It also comes bundled with the some very good earphones that normally cost £30 whereas the iPod comes bundled with some very poor headphones in comparison. It's also a lot cheaper as it costs £95 from Amazon whereas the iPod Nano 16 GB costs roughly £139. There was one thing for a long time that the iPod had on the upper hand of other devices which was legal video downloads from iTunes. Now however many companies such as Amazon mp3 have started to offer music videos as well. Lovefilm also offer video rentals and downloadable movies at a reasonable rate as well. iTunes have also fallen behind on DRM free music which means you can play the song on any device you want without having restrictions. Amazon mp3 offer a good store which is cheaper and it can automatically put the music into windows media player 11 or iTunes. Apple is starting to make their music DRM free.
The Sony walkman also enables the user to add their music to the player using windows media player or iTunes and it has support for podcasting as well. It also has a feature called SensMe (I know it's a stupid name). It automatically sorts your music according to your mood and it's generally quite accurate.
For usability, the iPod seems to be simpler but I think both devices are roughly the same in terms of usability as the Sony walkman is designed a lot like a phone and the iPod has been the same for so long that many people feel quite familiar with it if they've had previous iPods.
The iPod however has two different technologies that some might argue are better; Genius and smart playlists. Smart playlists are on most iPods but a lot of people don't know how to use them or they don't even know what they are. To be honest I wasn't sure what were until I looked into it. Smart playlists are really good ways of making playlists which are catered to whatever you want. For instance, there's a playlist which lists all the music that you've rated 4 stars or more so only your favourite songs are included and it will be updated automatically. There's even a site dedicated to a number of handy smart playlists called smartplaylists.com .
Genius is another good feature which is similar to smart playlists as it updates itself however it looks at your music and builds a playlist of music that's similar to a song you're listening to so this can be really handy for people with large collections of music. This feature is also updated frequently to get the best results however it's only available on newer iPods. This can be quite annoying but it's the way apples always done it. Personally I don't use it much as there are alternatives like last.fm and the SensMe technology seems to be quite similar.
The iPod also has a range of accessories that the Sony walkman doesn't have like a range of different third party cases. It does have some first party accessories however there normally quite expensive. It will however work with a range of speakers.
I think for a person who wants a music player mainly, the Sony walkman is the best device to get. I think that it has a range of features that are easy to use and it is much better value for money. I feel this may only apply to people who purely want a small device just for music.
