Burnout Paradise
Burnout Paradise is the fifth game in the series of Burnout games but this is the first game to implement free roam into the game system.
Firstly, the free roam system that has been included into this game must have given the people at Criterion Games a headache and I was expecting the game to come out as a kind of Need for Speed free roam rip-off. This however doesn’t happen, the way how you are involved in the free roam straight from the start of the game is brilliant, to start and event, the only way to do it is to drive to the start point. There are no restrictions on where you can go in the races either meaning that if you feel more confident going a slightly longer route than the shortest one, you can use that one instead if you choose. The free roam in races is really showing off in the new Marked Man and Road Rage race modes where you can drive anywhere to escape or to take down the opposition. One problem is that if you really don’t do well in a race and feel that you are going to lose, you cannot just press the restart button, you have to stop the car until you quit the event and then drive back to the start, this can get a little annoying at higher licences (which generally means higher difficulty). The free roam is yet again included in the multiplayer; Online Freeburn is where you roam the city online with a friend to do jumps and stunts and also to take each other down and you can also do challenges. If a challenge is activated all of the players must do something to complete the challenge suck as do a total of 10 barrel rolls totalled from the whole party but everyone must contribute one so to complete the challenge. Custom Races can also be started from here to and from any point in the city.
Burnout Paradise is also a quick adrenaline filled game with lots of fast paced action. The art-deco world is perfectly sculpted with a jump or stunt opportunity every few hundred meters. This world is also home to many hundreds of collectibles, they are Jumps, Smashes and Billboards. These collectibles are scattered around the city waiting to be discovered but will take a keen eye to spot and a skilful gamer with a lot of spare time to collect them all. The Single Player is also very well made with 120 events to find and then complete several time if necessary to get you licence up as all of the events are reset at a rank up. Some event type are extremely annoying and takes a really patient person to pull off a very good stunt run necessary to make it to the highest ranking licence. After a certain amount of events are completed unlocked cars are released into the city to be taken down, these cars are unlocked when they are taken down and are available at a junkyard to drive. These cars are faster than you, tougher than you and you will need all of you wits to take them down creating moments of intense fun. The graphics are stunning and in a crash the new engine for the driving really shines, the slow motion crashes brings you into a world where you cannot crash enough and the game can be made even more fun by just repeatedly crashing your car. One thing that will make you crash your car is the soundtrack, which will literally drive you up the wall (=P), why they have chosen them it is unknown but it is definitely NOT a Burnout soundtrack, it does not suit the fast pace of the game.
Something changed a minor amount from a previous game, crash mode has now changed into Showtime mode. Showtime is the first of the two types of Road Rule, Showtime is crashing on the road and going into many other cars to gain money, you gain more money by going a long way away from the initial crash and gain multipliers by crashing into buses. The other type of Road Rule is Timed mode where you go from one end of the road to the other end and beat the target time, this seems to take little effort though and is not as exhilarating as other game modes.
To conclude, Burnout Paradise is a game with only a few minor bugs and an annoying game type, this game is a perfect development into free roam and even though the game revolves mainly around this it is fun to just drive and crash around a city in fast cars. The wondrous graphics and well sculpted city work well with the game modes to create a game that is unrivalled in its class.
This is one of the best games on the Xbox 360 and dominates the racing genre. I give it a 10/10, and my congratulations to EA and Criterion Games for making an incredible game.
